Winter Maintenance Tips

Before the snow and ice come to North Texas, think ahead and take a few steps to get your home ready.

  • Since your heating system will be running constantly, remember to change out your furnace filters every month.
  • Have your chimney inspected and cleaned before starting a fire to guard against chimney fires.
  • Check your smoke detectors, fire alarms and carbon monoxide detectors and replace batteries to ensure they are operating properly.
  • When forecast calls for unusually cold temperatures, let water drip from hot and cold faucets overnight to keep them from freezing. Also, try keeping cabinet doors below sinks open to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes.
  • Make sure tree and shrub branches are well away from the house and windows (icy weather can cause them to break and damage your windows and roof).
  • Make sure gutters are clear so the melting ice can drain properly.
  • Have a snow shovel and rake on hand.
  • Walk around your home to check for small cracks and openings where mice and other pests can tunnel inside to the warmth of your home.
  • Clean dryer vent on outside of your home.
  • Always make sure you have bottled water, flash lights and a first aid kit on hand, just in case.
